Courtesy of the U.S. Army, what to look for in a sports drink after a workout.

  • Calorie count should be less than 96 calories per 8 ounce serving.
  • That’s 9 to 19 grams of carbohydrates per 8 ounces
  • Carbs to protein ratio should be 4 to 1.  Four times as many carbs as proteins.
  • No more than 240 milligrams of sodium per 8 ounces.
  • Make sure the drink only includes carbohydrates, electrolyutes, and proteins.  No carbonation, caffeine or herbals.
