Dr. Andrews believes the number one causal factor in the increasing number of injuries is fatigue.  All athletes, especially young athletes, need rest.  The musculoskeletal system needs periodization, an annual plan that includes periods of rest and recovery.

The average high school pitcher requiring Tommy John surgery has only one week off from baseball per year, normally the week between Christmas and New Years.

Young athletes need periodization, preferably 3-4 months off from sports per year so their bodies can recover.
